The Queen of England has died

There are many emotions surrounding this death. The first that comes to mind is that even though she was 96 years old, she was still working, she was still “our Queen” and we thought she might live for one day beyond for ever! After all, 70 years on the throne is unprecedented! Whether you are…

Discovering Music Theory

When I was learning music theory as a teenager, I was given one quite thick, red-covered book and told to “go read this” and then take the music theory exam at The Royal Schools of Music in London, England! The book cost less than one English Pound – 50 years ago! I went looking for…

Excellence on Purpose

It’s going to happen … it is just a matter of when

In the event that your Senior Minister departs from the life, are you as a Church Board, as Church Leaders as ready as possible with documents and protocols and instruments in hand? Do you, as a concerned member of the congregation know what questions to ask of your Church Leaders before such a catastrophic event happens at your Church?

The Story

16 months ago, my dear Pastor who had been my pastor for more than 25 years, departed this life. He pastored this particular Church for 38 years. It was a sizable congregation and he was a good preacher, a good pastor and a good shepherd. I liked to hear him preach and I liked being part of this vibrant congregation. He was sick for a very short time and died a few days before his 65th birthday.

What happened next shocked me and saddened me. Being very close to his wife and family, I found that the Church had no life insurance policy, no money to cover his funeral expenses and had no plan in place to help her replace his income.

What was she supposed to do?

How could this happen?

She found out after the fact of his passing that the church leadership had no protocols in place and the result was that the church leaders did not have enough money to cover the cost of their beloved pastor’s funeral services. Well, they did have some money, but if they used it for this catastrophic and unplanned-for event, they would not have enough to pay other on-going bills, like utilities and mortgage etc. They were trying to get off the hamster wheel of robbing Peter to pay Paul each month..

This hopelessly sad story does have a happy ending because he had another job. He was a professor at a Seminary as well. The Seminary leadership came in and picked up the tabs for the whole funeral expense plus, the Seminary put $1,000,000 on the table for a fully funded endowment in his name and in his honor, so that there would always be a professor teaching and chairing his program at this Seminary. The endowment was fully funded – as opposed to a fund raiser.

How did they do that?

How were they able to do that when his own church could not even afford to pick up the tabs for the funeral? His Church of 38 years struggled to purchase a spray of flowers for his casket.

What did the Seminary know that the Church did not know?

What did the Seminary do almost automatically and flawlessly that the Church did not know how to do at all?

This is not an isolated case. On the surface it looks like a rich church/poor church scenario, but in reality, it is not that at all.

It has taken me 16 months to figure out what is going on here between the Seminary’s way of doing things and the Church’s way of doing things. Now I would like to share my research with you. Because if your pastor dies while serving his congregation, I want you and your Church Leaders to be able to put a half a million dollars on the table, cover the cost of the funeral and replace your pastor’s salary for his grieving widow as well as search for a new Minister. It seems as though most go directly to search for a new Minister.

Church Leaders and members everywhere need to read these reports, so that you can   understand the difference between not having enough money in the coffers to fund a funeral for a beloved pastor and what it takes to make sure there is enough money for the funeral, the burial and the repass.

Bishop T. D. Jakes, a mega church pastor said to his congregation in a message: “I don’t trust anyone of you in here to take care of my wife and my kids if I die…” “I know how fast you can change…” What an indictment on Church leaders of a mega church. This tells me that my pastor’s case is not an isolated case at all.

2 Things a Church Can do to Truly Value Their Pastor is written because my Pastor, may he rest in peace, and my Church Leaders did not have the privilege of the information contained in this book. If he were still with us, he would want me to share this information with you so that your pastoral family never has to go through what my pastoral family had to go through when Pastor went on to glory.

We just don’t talk about these matters. We might be talking about how can we cut the Pastor’s salary and benefits instead. What is left unsaid and undone is not glorifying to God in any way. I hope you will purchase this book that costs less than a romantic dinner at a fine diner for two so that your Church will know how you can easily make sure that your pastor and his family are secure in the event of his passing, without leaving a massive hole in the Church’s coffers and bank accounts.
